77 State of Maryland Caroline County to wit Whereas application hath been made to me by a negro woman named Eliza Fountain for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travil out of this State of upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and wheras also upon the oath of Mary Griffith of Caroline County that the said negro woman named Eliza Fountain for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that from her own account she is in her seventeenth year of age four feet eleven can one ^half^ inches high or thereabouts of a dark mulattoe complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has a scar on the end of her left thumb just under her nail occasioned as she says from a gathering which has caused it to be shorter than her right thumb and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed (seal) In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my this 19th day of July Anno Domini 1833 Cost $1.00 Jo Richardson Clk of Caroline County Court State of Maryland Caroline County to wit Whereas at a County Court begun and held at Denton and for Caroline County on the first monday of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty one a certain negro woman named Diana by Judgment of the same Court recovered Judgment of her freedom of a certain John Stevens of Caroline County and whereas also upon the oath of John W. Vaux of Caroline County that the said negro woman named Diana for whom this certificate is made is the same woman named as having recovered Judgment of her freedom as aforesaid I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that from her own account she is about fifty four years of age five feet and one quarter of an inch high or thereabouts of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has two small scars of a burn under her right jaw and another small scar of a scratch or cut on her left cheek and another scar of a cut across the small of her right arm and a *To Joseph Richardson Esquire Clerk of Caroline County Court The undersigned a free negro of Caroline County wishing to visit Philadelphia for the purpose of seeing some of my relations By an act of Assembly of this state it is necessary my intention of leaving the state should be known to you; It is my intention to return here again some time in the month of November or December next.
