State of Maryland Caroline County to wit Whereas heretofore to wit on the twenty fifth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and thirty nine a certain John Hooper of Caroline County by Deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among the Land Records of Caroline County afd did manumit and set free amongst others a negro boy called Benjamin to be free from and after the date of the said manumission And Whereas the said negro Benjamin hath this day made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to act of Assembly in such case made and provided and being satisfied by the Oath of Colo William Potter that the said negro Benjamin to whom this Certificate is delivered is the Identical person mentioned by that name in the manumission [illegible] the application hereby Certify that from the age expressed in the manumission afsd the said negro man called John Benjamin is about twenty two years of age was raised as he says himself party in Caroline partly in Queen Anns & partly in Easton Counties he is five feet six inches high of tolerable make and black Complexion has a large scar on the outer part of the left thigh occasioned as he says by a burn and a small one on the left arm occasioned by a thorn and no other notable marks that I can [illegible] In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed the Public Seal of my office this 27th day of July 1813 Tho Richardson Clerk of Caroline County Cor |
