Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and
provided by which said act free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel
out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and
whereas also upon the oath of William Todd of Caroline County that the
said coloured man named Daniel Collins for whom this certificate is made
was free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that
from his own account he was twenty one years of age the fourth day of
August last five feet five & three quarter inches high or thereabouts was
born and raised in Caroline County complexion Brown has a perpendicular
scar of a cut nearly in the centre of his forehed another small scar
under the right eye crosswise the face and another perpendicular scar
about an inch and a half long on his right chin & two other tollerable
large scars lower down towards the instep of the same shin and no
other notable marks or scars that I have observed

          seal of my office this 1st day of April Anno Domini 1830

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application hath been
made to me by a coloured man named Isaac Smith for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which
said act free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state
upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon
the affirmation of Wright Hubbard of Caroline County that the said coloured
man named Isaac Smith for whom this certificate is made was free born I do
therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that according
to his own account he was twenty years of age the fifteenth day of January
last five feet seven and three quarter inches high or thereabouts was born and
raised in Caroline County Complexion dark Brown has a scar on his forehead
over the inner corner of his left eye brow and nearly perpendicular and
another scar at the outer cornner of his right eye and a large scar on his left
shin something in shape like a heart and another scar of a burn extending
nearly round his left leg and just above the ankle joint and no other
