Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas
heretofore to wit on the 24th day of December Eighteen
hundred and seven a certain William Burton of
Caroline County by deed of Manumission duly
executed acknowledged and Recorded among the Land
Records of Caroline County did manumit and set
free a certain negro boy named Jack to be free when
he should arrive at 2 to the age of twenty five years
and the said Jack now called Jack Hicks having
made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made
and provided.      And whereas also upon the oath
of John Nicols Esqr formerly of Caroline County now
of Pittsburg Pa that the said negro man named
Jack or Jack Hicks for whom this certificate is
made is the same person mentioned in the said
Manumission.            I do therefore grant his said
application and hereby certify that from his age
expressed in said manumission he is now about
forty five years of age five feet six and a quarter
inches high or thereabouts of a dark chesnutt
complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County aforesaid & has a large scar just behind
the left ear and a small one below the
right knee and has no other notable marks or
scars that I have observed
                In Testimony whereof I hereunto
                subscribe my name and affix the
(seal)        seal of Caroline County Court
                this 14th day of September Anno

Caroline County to wit      whereas application hath
been made to me by a negro woman named Alsa
Black for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts
of Assembly in such case made and provided by which
said acts free negroes and mullattoes are permitted to travel
out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of
being free born.   And whereas also upon the oath of
John J. Faulkner Tilghman Nuttle of Caroline county
aforesaid that the said negro ^wo^man named Alsa Black
for whom this certificate is made was free born   I do
therefore grant his said application and hereby certify
that from his own account he is now about twenty
one ^thirty five^ years of age five feet seven ^two^ inches high or thereabouts
