Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

                             I hereunto subscribe my name and
            (Seal)        affix the seal of Caroline County Court
                             this 28th day of August A D 1850
                                           James H. Fountain Clk


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit      Whereas
application hath been made to me by a negro man
named Anthony H Stephen Wilkerson for a certificate
of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such
case made and provided by which said acts free negroes
and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state
upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born
          And whereas also upon the oath of William Hinson
of Caroline county aforesaid that the said negro man
named Stephen Wilkerson for whom this certificate
is made was free born            I do therefore grant his said
application and hereby certify that from his own
account he is now about twenty two years of age
five feet and Eleven inches high or thereabouts of a
dark chesnutt Complexion born and raised in caroline
county and has a large scar on his neck near the
cheek bone and a small one on his left arm
near the elbow & one on the little finger of the left hand
and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
                         In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
                         my name and affix the seal of Caroline
    (seal)             County to wit this 6th day of September
                            Anno Domini 1850

State of Maryland;   Caroline County to wit.  Whereas application
hath been made to me by a negro ^wo^man named John Thomas
Cooper ^Elizabeth Ann Dixon^ for a certificate of her freedom agreebly to the acts of
Assembly in such Case made and provided by which
said acts free negroes and mulatto's are permitted to
travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of
John J Faulkner ^William J Pratt^ of Caroline County aforesaid that the
said negro woman named Elizabeth Ann Dixon for
whom this certificate is made was free born.  I do
therefore grant her said application and hereby certify
that from her own account she is now about Eighteen
years of age five feet two & a half inches high or thereabouts
of a dark brown Complexion was born and raised
in Caroline County and has a small scar of a cut
