State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application
hath been made to me by a negro man named James Friend
for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly
in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroe's
and mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of this state upon the
obtention of a certificate of being free born; And whereas also
upon the Oath of Matthew Patton of Caroline County aforesaid
that the said negro man named James Friend for whom this
certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant his
said application and hereby certify that from his own account
he was twenty one years of age on the eighth day of December instant
five feet five and one half inches high or thereabouts complexion
black was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid and
has a scar of a cut just over his right eye and has no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
(Seal of Caroline)      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my
(  County Court )      name and affix the seal of Caroline  
                                County Court this 22nd day of December

for a Certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in
such Case made and provided by which said acts free negroes
and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon
the obtention of a certificate of being free born; And whereas
also upon the Oath of James Turner of Queen Anns County that the
said negro woman named Rosetta Smith for whom this certificate
is made was free born; I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby Certify that from her own account she was
twenty two years of age on the twentieth day of February
instant five feet four and and three quarter inches high
or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline County
and of a black complexion ^and has several scars or marks in her left temple^ and has no other notable
