Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;   Whereas application hath been made
to me by a negro man named Harrison Mason for a certificate of his
freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided
by which said acts free negroes and mulatto's are permitted to travel out
of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born; And Whereas
also upon the oath of John Underwood of Caroline County aforesaid that
the said negro man named Harrison Mason for whom this certificate
is made was free born.   I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby certify that from his own account he was Nineteen years
of age sometime in August last past five feet six inches high or
thereabouts of a  black complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County and has a small scar on the left cheek just below the eye &
one other small scar on the back of the right hand near the wrist &
has no other no other notable marks or scars that I have observed

(seal of Caroline)      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name
(  County Court )      and affix the seal of Caroline County Court this 3.rd
                                day of December Anno Domini 1846

also upon the oath of Jacob Morgan of Caroline County aforesaid that
the said negro man named John Mason for whom this certificate is made
was free born.  I do therefore grant this his said application and hereby
certify that from his own account he is now about nineteen years
of age five feet eight & ½ Inches high or thereabouts was born and
raised in Caroline County aforesaid and of a black complexion has one small
scar on the right temple between the ear and eye and has no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed.  In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
(Seal)            my name and affix the seal of Caroline County Court this 12th day
                     of December 1846
