himself Thomas Cuff) to be free when he should ^serve^ seventeen years &
and nine months from the date of the ^said^ manumission; And the said
negro man named Thomas Cuff having made application to me
for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in
Such Case made and provided.   And whereas also upon the oath of
William F. Chilton of Caroline County aforesaid that the Said
negro man named Thomas Cuff for whom this Certificate is made
is the Same person mentioned in the said manumission and that
he is now free.   I do therefore grant his said application and
hereby certify that from his own account he is now about thirty
five years of age five feet five inches high or thereabouts of
a light chesnut Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County
aforesaid & has no notable marks or Scars that I have observed
(Seal of Caroline)      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe My name
(  County Court )       and affix the Seal of Caroline County Court this
                                  15.th day of August 1846

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application
hath been made to me by a negro man named John Thomas Cooper
for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such
Case made and Provided by which said acts free negroes and mulatto's
are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a Certificate
of being free born; And Whereas also upon the oath of John G.
Faulkner of Caroline County aforesaid that that the said negro man
named John Thomas Cooper for whom this certificate is made was
free born.   I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify
that from his own account he is now about twenty two years of age
five feet seven inches high or thereabouts of a black Complexion was
born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid & has a large scar on
his breast near his his throat & has another scar on his left arm near
the wrist and has no other notable marks or scars that I
have observed
                   In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe My name
