Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit.   Whereas application hath
been made to me by a negro woman named Leeah Wright for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case made and
provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel
Out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born
And whereas also upon the oath of Joshua Clark of Caroline County
aforesaid that the said negro woman named Leeah Wright for whom
this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant her
said application and hereby certify that from her own account
she is now about twenty                                 years of age five
feet four and one fourth inches high or thereabouts was born and
raised in Caroline County aforesaid and of a chesnut complexion and
has no notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal of Caroline)      In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe My name and
(      County       )      affix the seal of Caroline County Court this 3d day of

provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to
travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born
and whereas also upon the oath of Joshua Clark of Caroline County aforesaid
that the said negro woman named Elizabeth Wright for whom this certificate
is made was free born I do therefore grant her said application

years of age four feet eleven inches high or thereabouts was born and
raised in Caroline County aforesaid and of a chesnut complexion and
has no notable marks or scars that I have observed   In testimony
