high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline County and of black
complexion and has a small scar of a cut near the first joint of his left thumb
and another small scar just above the wrist joint and has no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
              public seal of my office this 14th day of January A D. 1845

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath
been made to me by a negro man named John Prattiss for a Certificate of
his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such Case made and provided
by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this
State upon the Oath of Jesse Hubbard Sen.r of Caroline County
aforesaid that the said negro man named John Prattiss for whom this
certificate is made was free born.  I do therefore grant his said
Application and hereby Certify that from this own account he is now
about twenty five years of age five feet eight and one half inches
high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline County and of
a ^black^ dark Complexion and has no notable marks or scars that I have
observed
                                In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name
(seal of Caroline)      and affix the seal of Caroline County Court this twenty
( County Court  )     fifth day of February Eighteen hundred and forty five

Certificate of his freedom agreeably to the Acts of Assembly in such
case made and provided by which said acts free negroe's and
mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention
of a certificate of being free born; And whereas also upon
the oath of William Connelly of Caroline County aforesaid
