Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made
made to me by a negro man named Joseph Howard for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such Case made and provided by which said
acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the
obtention of a certificate of being free born; And whereas also upon the obtention
affirmation of Isaac Harris of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro
man named Joseph Howard for whom this certificate is made was ^free^ born and
I do therefore grant his said application and hereby Certify that from his own account
he was twenty two years of age some time in the latter part of December
last five feet four and a half inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in
Caroline County aforesaid and of a black complexion and has a small scar at
the outer corner of his left eye another small scar on the middle finger of his left
hand between the hand joint and Knuckle and another scar on the top of his right
foot and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(Seal)                      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and
                               affix the public seal of my office this 25th day of July A. D.

made to me by mulatto woman named Ann Emily Thomas for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and
provided by which said acts free negroes and Mulattoes are permitted to travel
out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born And
Whereas also upon the oath of Delphia Spurry of Caroline County aforesaid
that the said mulatto woman named Ann Emily Thomas for whom this certificate
is made was free born I do therefore grant her said application and
hereby Certify that from her own account she is now about twenty years of age
five feet ^two and^ and three quarter inches high or thereabouts was born and raised
in Caroline County aforesaid and of a dark mulatto complexion
and has no notable marks or scars that I have observed
(Seal)                      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name
                               and affix the public seal of My office this 26th day
