174 State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas heretofore to wit; on the twenty first day of May Eighteen hundred and sixteen a Certain Loadman Shields of Caroline County by deed of Manumission duly acknowledged and recorded among the land records of Caroline County aforesaid did Manumit and set free among others a certain negro boy named Charles four years of age on the twenty sixth day of March then next to be free when he should arrive at the age of thirty years; And Whereas the said negro boy (now man) named Charles having made application to me for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided; and whereas also upon the oath of Captn ^James^ Shields of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named Charles for whom this Certificate is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission; I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from his age as expressed in said manumission he was thirty years of age on the twenty sixth day of March last past five feet five inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid and of a black Complexion and has two small scars of Cuts on his right thumb and another scar on his right leg about half way between his ancle and Knee joints and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed, In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe (seal) my name and affix the public seal of my office this 13.th day of may Anno Domini 1843 Cost $100 Jo Richardson Clk of Caroline County Court State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to me by a ^negro man^ named Daniel Dutton for a^ Certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a Certificate of being free born; And Whereas also upon the affirmation of Thomas Stanton of Caroline County that the said negro boy named Daniel Dutton for whom this Certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant his said application and hereby Certify that from his own account he is now about twenty three years ^of age five feet four inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in^ and raised in Caroline County and of a brown Complexion and has a small scar in his forehead and a small scar across his right eye brow and another small scar near the corner of his right eye and has no other marks or scars that I have observed In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix the public seal of my office this 12th day of June Anno Domini 1843 (Seal) Jo Richardson Clk of $1.00 Caroline County Court |
