Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

H. Cheezum of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named Henry
Bantum for whom this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant
his said application and hereby certify that from his own account he was twenty
one years of age on the first day of October instant five feet eight and one half
inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid
complexion black and has a small scar of a bite in his forehead and has no
other notable marks or scars that I have observed  In Testimony whereof I hereto
(seal)                       subscribed my name and afix the public seal of my office this
                               26.th day of October Anno Domino 1841   Jo Richardson Clk

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application hath been made to
me by a negro man named James Webb for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to
the acts of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free
negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention
of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of Charles Edgell
of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named James Webb for whom
this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby certify that from his own account he was twenty one years of age
on the sixteenth day of February last past five feet three inches high or thereabouts
was born and raised in caroline county and of a dark Brown complexion
and has a small scar on the back of his right hand and another small scar
just under his collar bone and on his left breast and has no other notable
(seal)           mark or scars that I have observed   In Testimony whereof I hereto
                   subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my office this 9.th
                   day of November A. D. 1841               Jo Richardson  Clk

the Acts of Assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes and
Mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born; And whereas also upon the affirmation of John Wilson of caroline
county aforesaid that the said negro girl named Adaline Macke^r^y for whom this
Certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant her said application and
hereby Certify that from her own account she was seventeen years of age on the
