acts free negroes and mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of this State upon the
obtention of a certificate of being free born  And whereas also upon the oath
of Thomas Culbreth of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man
named Henry Atkinson for whom this certificate is made was free born; I do
therefore grant his said application and hereby Certify that from his own account
he was twenty one years of age on the eighth day of April last past five
feet six and a half inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline
County and of a dark mulatto complexion and has a small scar of a cut on the
first joint of his fore finger on his left hand and another scar on his little finger
on the same hand and has no other notable mark or scar that I have observed
In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
(seal)                     of my office this 28 day of september anno domini 1841

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to me
by a negro man named Jesse Black for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the
acts of assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes
and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born; And whereas also upon the oath of Jonathan Willson of Caroline
County aforesaid that the said negro man named Jesse Black for whom this Certificate
is made was free born; I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that
from his own account he was forty two years of age on the first day of February last past
five feet eight inches high or thereabouts complexion nearly black was born and raised
in Caroline County and has a large scar on the Calf of his right leg and has no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
