Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

of John Rumbold of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named Joshua
Webb for whom this certificate is made is the issue of the aforesaid Henny and that
he is now free I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that
he from his own account he was twenty five years of age on the second day of October
Instant five feet three and a half inches high or thereabouts of a Brown Complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid and has a large scar of
a cut on his left wrist joint and another scar of a cut on the end of his little
finger on his left hand and has no other notable marks or scars that I have
observed         In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
(seal)               public seal of my office this twenty seventh day of October
                       A. D. Eighteen hundred and forty            Jo Richardson  Clk of
                               cost $1.00                                       Caroline County Court


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro woman named Ethelinda Carney for a Certificate of
her freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such cases made and provided
by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of
this State upon the obtention of a Certificate of being free born; And whereas
also upon the Affirmation of Matilda Davis of Caroline County aforesaid that
the said negro woman named Ethelinda Carney for whom this Certificate
is made was free born; I do therefore grant her said application and hereby
certify that from her own account she will be twenty five years of age some
time in November next five feet one and a half inches high or thereabouts
was born and raised in Caroline County and of a brown Complexion and
has a scar of a cut on her right temple and extending Crosswise to the ear
and another scar on her left breast and has no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed

                            affix the Public seal of my Office this 30.th day of
                            October A. D. 1840          Jo Richardson  Clek of
                                              Cost $1.00      Caroline County Court
