State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas on the twenty sixth day of
October in the year Eighteen hundred and thirty nine a certain James Sangston
of Caroline County and State aforesaid by deed of manumission duly executed
acknowledged and recorded among the land records of Caroline
County aforesaid did manumit and set free a certain negro man named
Thomas Lucas to be free and at perfect liberty from the day of said manumission;
And whereas the said negro man named Thomas Lucas having
made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act
of Assembly in such cases made and provided:  And Whereas also upon
the oath of William R Sangston of Caroline County aforesaid that the
said negro man named Thomas Lucas for whom this certificate is made
is the same person mentioned in the said manumission  I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that from his age as expressed
in said manumission he is about thirty three years of age five feet ten
inches and one fourth of an inch high or thereabouts was born and raised
in Caroline County aforesaid complexion black and has a large scar
of a cut across the instep of his left foot and another small scar of
a cut on his left middle finger and has no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name
(seal)                          and affix the public seal of my office this 19th day

                                     Cost $1.00                  of Caroline County Court


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas Application hath been
made to me by a negro woman named Maria Whiteley for a certificate of her
freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided by which
said acts free negroes & mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon
the obtention of a Certificate of being free born; And Whereas also upon the
oath of Eli Collison of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman
named Maria Whiteley for whom this Certificate is made was free born; I do
therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that from her own
account she was nineteen years on the twenty fifth day of August instant
five feet four and a quarter inches high or thereabouts was born & raised in
Caroline County and of a dark brown Complexion and has no notable
