Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

of Caroline County Aforesaid that the said negro man named James Hutchens for
whom this Certificate was free born;   I do therefore grant his said Application and
hereby Certify that from his own account he was twenty two years of age some time
in May last past five feet three and a half inches high or thereabouts was born &
Raised in Caroline County complexion black and has a large scar of a burn
on his right wrist joint another scar of a cut on his left wrist and three other
small scars on his right knee joint and another scar of a cut just above the
left Knee joint and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)                     In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and
                              Affix the public seal of my office this 6.th day of May A. D.

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro man named Charles Rich for a certificate of his
freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided
by which said acts free negroe's and mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of this
State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born; and whereas
also upon the oath of Joshua Clarke of Caroline County aforesaid that the
said negro man named Charles Rich for whom this certificate is made was
free born; I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that
from his own account he was twenty one years of age on the thirteenth
day of February last past five feet five and three quarter inches high
or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline County complexion
Black and has a small scar on his left thumb joint another scar on the
inside of his right legg and another scar on the first joint of his forefinger
on his left hand and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)         In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
                 public seal of my office this 11th day of May A D. 1840
