Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Levi for whom this Certificate is made is the same person mentioned in said
manumission  I do therefore grant his said application and hereby Certify
that from his own account he was twenty two years of age on the seventh day
day of April last five feet eight and one fourth inches high or thereabouts
was born and raised in Caroline County complexion dark brown and has a
small scar of a cut in or across the right eye brown and another scar on his
right elbow joints and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)      In Testimony Whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix
               the public seal of my Office this 29.th day of February A D. eighteen
               hundred and forty                                       Jo Richardson Clk of

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas Application hath been
made to me by a negro man named Henry Wright for a Certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the Acts of Assembly in such Case made and provided by which
said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon
the obtention of a Certificate of being free born; And whereas also upon the oath
of Joshua Clarke of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man
named Henry Wright for whom this Certificate is made was free born I do
therefore grant his said Application and hereby Certify that from his own
account he was twenty one years oa ge on the eighth day of October last
past five feet seven and a half inches ^high^ or thereabouts was born and raised
in Caroline County complexion black and has two large scars on his left
leg about six inches apart and a small scar on his left thumb and another
small scar on his right hand and near his thumb and has no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed
