State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas heretofore to wit; on the twenty eighth
day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty
a certain Benjamin Denny by deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged
and recorded among the land records of Caroline County did manumit and set
free a certain negro man named Henry Byns to be free from the date of said
manumission and the said negro man named Henry Byns having made
application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of Assembly
in such cases made and provided; And Whereas also upon the declaration of
Joshua Clarke and upon my own personal Knowledge that the said negro man
named Henry Byns for whom this certificate is made is the same person
mentioned in the said manumission I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby Certify that from his age as expressed in said manumission
he is now about fifty nine years of age born and raised in Caroline County
and of a dark mulatto Complexion five feet eight and three quarter
inches high or thereabouts and has a scar of a cut on the upper part
of his right hand and another scar of a cut on the left fore finger and
has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)              In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
                      public seal of my office this twenty fifth day of November

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas heretofore to wit on the
thirty first day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and
thirty one; a certain Thomas Swann of Caroline County and State aforesaid
by deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among
the Land record books of Caroline County aforesaid did manumit and set free
a certain negro woman named Harriett to be free ^&^ at perfect liberty from the
date of the said manumission; and the said negro woman named Harriett
having made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the
acts of Assembly in such case made and provided      And whereas also upon
the oath of Mary Swann of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro
woman named Harriett for who whom this Certificate ^is made^ is the same person
mentioned in the said manumission; I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that from her age expressed in the said manumission
