Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to me by
a negro man named Daniel Hutchens for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the
acts of Assembly in such cases made and provided by which said acts free
negroe's and mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention
of a certificate of being free born; And whereas also upon the oath of John R. T.
Saulsbury of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named
Daniel Hutchens for whom this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that from his own
account he was twenty four years of age some time in February last
past five feet seven and a quarter inches high or thereabouts was born
and raised in Caroline County Complexion Black and has several scars
on his left leg and two other scars on his right leg and has no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed            In Testimony whereof I hereto
(seal)                 subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my
                         office this 9th day of May Anno Domini 1839

agreeably to the act of Assembly in such case made and Provided; by which said
Acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon
the obtention of a Certificate of being free born; And Whereas also upon the
declar^a^tion of Doctr George T. Martin of Caroline County Aforesaid that
the said negro woman named Patty Hutchens for whom this Certificate
is made was free born I do therefore grant his Said Application and hereby
Certify that from her own account she was seventeen Years of age some time
in February last past five feet one and ^a^ quarter inches high or thereabouts
was born and raised in Caroline County Complexion black and has no notable
marks or scars that I have observed

                            name and affix the public seal of my Office this
                            13th day of May Anno Domini eighteen hundred and thirty nine
