Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro woman named Nancy Wright for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such cases made and
provided by which said acts free negroe's and mulattoe's are permitted
to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being
free born; And whereas also upon the oath of Robert Walker of Caroline
County that the said negro woman named Nancy Wright for whom this
certificate is made was free born:  I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that according to her own account she was twenty
two years of age in March last four feet nine and one half inches high
or thereabouts of a bright mulattoe Complexion was born and raised
in Caroline County and has a black mole on the top of her right breast
and another black mole about the same size higher up on the top
of her ^left^ breast or rather between her breasts   and has no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)        In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and
                affix the public seal of my office this Eighteenth
                day of October Anno Domini Eighteen hundred
                and thirty six                  Jo Richardson  Clk of
                            $1.00                   Caroline County Court

to me by a negro man named Huett Ross for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to
acts of Assembly in such Cases made and provided by which said acts free negroes and
mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a Certificate
of being free born: and whereas upon the oath of Barrett Patten of Caroline County
that the said negro man named Huett Ross for whom this Certificate is made was free
born:  I do therefore grant his said application and hereby Certify that according to his
own account he was twenty three years of age on the eight day of September last he
is five feet eight inches high or thereabouts of a complexion nearly black was born and
raised in Caroline County and has a small scar acrosswise his left cheek and another
scar on the back of his left wrist lenghtwise of the wrist and has no other notable mark or
scars that I have observed

                            Seal of my office this twenty first day of November Anno Domini eighteen
                            hundred and thirty six
