57 Winterson of Anne Arundel County in the State of Maryland for divers good causes and considerations me thereunto moving as also in further consideration of one hundred dollars current money to me in hand paid by James Matthews of said state and county have released from slavery liberated manumitted and set free and by these presents do hereby release from slavery liberate manumit and set free William Henry Harrison Matthews aged about eight years and John aged about six years children of the above named James Matthews and Mary Matthews his wife the said children to remain with the said James Matthews and be subject to his control and authority until they shall arrive at the age of twenty one years from and after which age they they said William Henry Harrison and John I do declare to be from thenceforth free manumitted and discharged from all manner of servitude or service to me my executors or administrators forever. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty fifth day of October in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and forty nine Signed sealed and Gassaway Winterson (seal) delivered in presence of J. W. Hunter Anne Arundel County to wit: On this twenty fifth day of October 1849 personally appeared Gassaway Winterson party to the within instrument of writing before me the subscriber a Justice of the peace of the State of Maryland in and for said county and acknowledges the same to be his act and deed |
