on the fifth day of August next to serve as
apprentices until they severally attain the
age of twenty one years according to the Indentures
approved of by the orphans court of Anne
Arundel County
Annapolis 9.th Novr 1847

I Henrietta Covington the owner of Joseph Covington
as above stated do hereby authorize him to go
to Baltimore and return here as often as his
business as my agent requires it which will
be attested by his having the possession of this paper

      Robt Birckhead
                  to
      John Ross
 To all whom it may
concern be it known
that I Robt Birckhead of
Anne Arundel County
in the State of Maryland
for divers good causes and considerations me
thereunto moving to release from slavery
liberate manumit and set free my negro
boy John Ross when he shall arrive at thirty
five years of age; said boy was born August
16.th 184; he is to serve my wife during her
life and after her death to serve the residue of
his time equally divided among my heirs
should he not leave the state after the expiration
of his servitude.  I appoint my son William N
Birckhead to act as his agent; that is to see
that he is kept among my heirs treated well
and compensated for his labor and him the
