    Deed of Manumission and Release of Service
          Whereas my slave Joseph Smith has enlisted
in the service of the united states now in consideration thereof
I Priscilla Owens of anne arundel County state of maryland
do hereby in Consideration of said enlistment Manumit
set free and release the above named Joseph Smith from
all service due me his freedom to commence from
the date of his enlistment as aforesaid in the
Regiment of Colored Troops in the service of the united
states
             Witness my hand & seal this fifteenth day of
april 1864                                    Priscilla Owens
