77 dollar to me in hand paid at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have released from slavery manumitted and set free after the expiration of five years from this date hereof and by these presents do release from slavery manumit and set free after the expiration of five years as aforesaid the two following persons of colour namely my son George Howard aged about twenty four years and my daughter Ruth Howard aged about Eighteen years they being each and both of them of a healthy constitution sound in mind and body and capable of procuring by labour for himself and herself respectively sufficient food and raiment with other requisite necessaries of life which my said two children above mentioned I purchased of mary Paul and Vachel Brown in april 1817 at which time they were delivered unto my possession In Testimony whereof the said Philip Howard hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day & year above written Signed Sealed & delivered in his presence of: Geo: Ellicott Philip X Howard (seal) John Ellicott mark On the back of the aforegoing deed was thus written to wit: Anne Arundel County to wit: Personally appeared before me the subscriber one of the Justices of the peace in and for the County aforesaid the within named Philip Howard and acknowledged the within instrument of writing to be his act and deed according to the true intent and meaning thereof.
