632 To all whom it may Concern Be it known That I Ann Caroline Battee of Anne Arundel County in the State of maryland for divers good causes and Considerations me thereunto moving as also in future consideration of the sum of five dollars Current money to me in hand paid have released from slavery liberated manumitted and set free and by these presents do hereby release from Slavery liberate manumit and set free from and after the respective period herein after named the following servant to wit Nicholas Johnson being of the age of about twenty two to be free on the first day of January Eighteen hundred and fifty one he the said Nicholas Johnson being able to work and gain a sufficient livelyhood and maintenance for himself The object of this manumission is to Conform to an act made by the State of maryland providing for the liberation of slaves upon the Condition they go to some Colonized Settlement of the Coloured people in Africa provided by the government of the United States therefore after the said Nicholas Johnson has performed his term of servitude he shall be free or that he shall have his choice then to go to some colonized portion of coloured people in Africa or any other part selected by these United States or under the superintendance of the Colonization society or in case of refusal he the said Nicholas Johnson shall forfeit his freedom and shall again be the lawful slave of me Ann Caroline Battee or in case of my death leaving no lawful issue to my Brother John Osborne Battee & his heirs but it is further granted so far as is Consistent with the Laws of Maryland that if the said Nicholas Johnson after the expiration of his term of servitude if he chooses to go to Africa he the said Nicholas Johnson is authorised for a prudent time to hire himself for the purpose of raising means to take with him to Africa to make himself comfortable when he arrives at said Settlement This manumission gives further authority that after the said |
