380 from slavery liberated manumitted and set free and by these presents do hereby release from slavery liberate manumit and set free my brother Samuel Matthews a mulatto man formerly the property of Benjamin Harwood late of the City of Annapolis and who was purchased by me of Richard Harwood of Thomas and Heeny H Harwood administrators of said Benjamin Harwood deceased and him the said mulatto man Samuel Matthews named as above I do declare to be free manumitted and discharged from all manner of servitude or service to me my executors or administrators from and after the date In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the twenty seventh day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty seven Signed Sealed & delivered in the presence of S Ann Maynard Henry Mathews (Seal) J J Cowman At the foot of the aforegoing Deed was thus written to wit State of Maryland Anne Arundel County to wit On the 27th day of July one thousand eight hundred and twenty seven personally appears Heeney Matthews party to the within instrument of writing before me the subscriber a Justice of the peace of the State of Maryland for the county aforesaid and acknowledges the same to be his act and deed for the purposes within mentioned and the mulatto man Samuel Matthews within named to be from this day free manumitted and discharged from all services to him or to any claiming under him and to be free and manumitted according to the acts of assembly in such cases made and provided Acknowledged before R I.
