184 This Indenture Witnesseth That I John Hooper of ann arundel County in the State of maryland for divers good causes and Considerations and likewise in consideration of the sum of one Dollar to me in hand paid at and before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge have released from slavery manumitted and sett free my negro man named Benjamin Brown being under forty five years of age of healthy Constitution sound in mind and body and Capable by labour to procure to him sufficient food and raiment with other requisite necessaries of life. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this thirteenth day of march in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and twenty one Signed Sealed and delivered in presence of us Gideon White John Hooper (seal) Thomas Tucker At the foot of the aforegoing deed was thus written to wit: Ann Arundell County sc. On the 13 day of march 1821 personally appears John Hooper party to the within instrument of writing before the subscriber a Justice of the peace for the State of maryland and County aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and the within mentioned negro Benjamin Brown to be henceforth manumitted and discharged from all services to him or to others claiming under him to be free and manumitted according to the act of assembly in such case made and provided paid Acknowledged before Gideon White Ex.d 2½ Recorded the 13th day of march 1821 |
