156 Williams party to the within instrument of writing and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and for the use & purpose therein mentioned Chd Acknowledged before William OHara Ex.d Abner Linthicum 2 Recorded the 22d day of april 1820 This Indenture Witnesseth That I Benjamin Wells of anne arundel County in the State of maryland for and in the sum of one Cent to me in hand paid at and before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath released from slavery manumitted and set free and by these presents do release from slavery manumit and set free the two following slaves on the terms as hereafter mentioned my mulatto man named William aged four years twenty four years to serve until he arrives to the age of thirty five years my negro Girl named Jenny aged Eleven years to serve until she arrives to the age of twenty five years they being under forty five years of age of healthy constitutions sound in mind and body Capable of labour to procure sufficient food and raiment with other requisite necesssaries of life. In Testimony whereof the said Benjamin Wells hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal this fourth day of may Eighteen hundred and twenty Signed Sealed and delivered in presence of us Joseph Bucey Benjamin Wells (seal) Robert Franklin On the back of the aforegoing deed was thus written to wit: anne arundel County to wit: On this fourth day of may Eighteen hundred and twenty personally (appears) |
