16 day of august 1807 personally appears Susanna Foster party to the within instrument of writing before me the subscriber a Justice of the peace of the state of maryland for the said county and acknowledges the same to be her act and deed for the purposes therein mentioned and the negro man within named to be manumitted liberated and free after the decease of the said Susanna Foster or to any claiming under her and to be free and manumitted according to the act of assembly in such cases made and provided acknowledged before Thomas Sellman Recorded Sept.r 24.th 1807 State of Maryland ann arundel county Sc.t Know all men by these presents that I Samuel Ridout of the county afores.d in and for divers considerations do hereby liberate manumit and discharge from slavery from and after the first day of January which will be in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and twenty a negro boy named James Ross aged about two years son of a negro woman named Hannah Ross and the said James Ross I do declare to be on the day above mentioned freed manumitted and discharged from all manner of service or servitude to me my executors or administrators and from all claim or right of servitude by me my executors or administrators forever and I do also by these presents agree and permit a certain negro woman named Phoebe Richardson grandmother of the said James Ross in consideration that she will feed clothe and maintain the said James Ross to retain and keep him in her possession until the period above limitted and appointed when his freedom shall commence and take effect by virtue of these presents In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my |
