and in consideration of the sum of five dollars current
money, to me in hand paid by Frank H. Stockett of the
City of Annapolis, and State aforesaid, at and before the sealing
and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged
have granted, bargained and sold, and by these presents do
grant, bargain and sell, unto the said Frank H. Stockett, his
Executors, Administrators and Assigns, my negro man called
Sam Jones, now hired to M.rs Matilda E. Green of said city
To Have and to hold the said negro man a slave for life
above bargained and sold, or mentioned, or intended
so to be, unto the said Frank H. Stockett, his Executors, Administrators
and Assigns, in trust nevertheless, to and for the use of
my daughter Ellen Stockett, after, and from the period of the
termination of my natural life, and reserving unto myself
the full and absolute control of said negro man, during said
period, with authority to employ his services, and to take, receive
and enjoy his hire or wages, and apply the same in such manner
as I may deem best, as full, as if these presents had not been
executed, and it is hereby further declared and provided
that nothing herein shall be construed, to render the said
Frank H. Stockett, his Heirs, Executors, or Administrators, liable
for any beyond their actual receipts, the intent of the parties hereto,
being that the said Joseph N. Stockett, during his Natural life
shall have the full authority, control and possession of said
negro man, with the privilege of employing or disposing of his
services, or his wages or hire, at his own discretion, so far forth
as may be consistent with the terms of this trust, and from and
after said period, in compliance with the expressed wishes of
the late wife of said Joseph N. Stockett, to whom said negro man
formerly belonged, to permit the said Ellen Stockett to dispose
of said negro man in such manner as she may deem best.
In witness whereof, I the said Joseph N. Stockett, have
hereunto set my hand and seal this 21.st day of November
in the year 1850

State of Maryland, Anne Arundel County, to wit:   On this twenty
first day of November, in the year 1850, before the Subscriber, a Justice
of the Peace of the State of Maryland, in and for said County
personally appeared the above named Joseph N. Stockett, who is
personally known to me to be the identical person named
