353 to the purport true intent and meaning of the same Acknowledged before Charles Corkran State of Maryland Anne Arundel County to wit On this 15th day of June in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and forty nine personally appeared before me Thomas J. Mezick and made oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that the consideration set forth in this Bill of Sale is true and bona fide as therein set forth according to the true intent and meaning thereof and the act of assembly in such case made & provided sworn before J W Hunter Maryland Dorchester County to wit I hereby certify that Charles Corkran gentleman before whom the aforegoing acknowledgment appears to have been made and who has thereto subscribed his name was at the time of so doing a Justice of the peace of the state of Maryland in and for Dorchester County duly commissioned and sworn (Seal's) In Testimony whereof I hereto set name and affix the seal of Dorchester County (Place) Court this 22d day of May 1849 W.m Jackson Clk Received June 15 1849 one dollar for stamp duty on this instrument of writing Jos H. Nicholson Clk Recorded on the 15th day of June 1849 Cost $.75 paid
and having in his possession a certain negro boy Richard a slave for a term of years to serve the said James H Watkins of N. to the full time and expiration of the twentieth day of March in the year eighteen hundred and fifty two then be free; And whereas by reason of the bad conduct of the said negro boy in frequently running away from the service of the said Watkins and on application of the said Watkins by petition in writing to the Orphans Court of said county stating and proving said conduct the said Orphans Court did on the nineteenth day of December eighteen hundred and forty eight order and adjudge "that said negro boy Richard serve his master and owner James H. Watkins one year in addition to his term of service, that is that he serve until the twentieth day of March eighteen hundred and fifty three in order to reimburse his master the said petitioner for losses caused by his running away at difference times;" And whereas the said James H. Watkins hath agreed to sell said negro boy to the said Bernard M. Campbell with the view of his being removed beyond the limits of said state as authorised to do by said order Now this Indenture witnesseth that for and in consideration of the premises and of the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars in hand paid to the said |
