             On the back of the aforegoing was thus written to wit

State of maryland Anne Arundel County to wit  On this seventeenth day of
October 1839 personally appeared before me the subscriber a Justice of the
peace of the state of maryland aforesaid in and for the County aforesaid
the within Matilda Bourke administratrix aforesaid and acknowledged
the aforegoing Bill of sale or Instrument of writing to be her act and deed
according to the true intent and meaning thereof

5      Recorded the 28th day of October 1839


    Know all men by these present that I Thomas J Laurence of Anne Arundel
County for the purpose of Compromising and adjusting a certain Controversy which
has arisen between me and one William Hardesty of Calvert County and in
Consideration of a release and abandonment of by the said William of all claims
and demands against me by the said William in right of his wife Elizabeth
Hardesty and of the sum of one dollar Current money to me in hand paid by
John Beckett of Calvert County at and before the sealing and delivery of these
presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained
and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell unto the said
John Beckett his Executors administrators and assigns one negro woman
named Nancy aged about twenty five years or thereabouts and her two
Children Henry aged about two years and Gassaway aged about nine
months which negroes are now in my possession  To have and To hold the
aforesaid negroes with their Increase unto the said John Beckett his Executors
administrators and assigns to his and their only proper use and behoof
in trust  Nevertheless that he and they will hold and employ the said
negroes and every of them and their increase to the sole and seperate use
of the said Elizabeth wife of said William Hardesty of Calvert County
during her natural life and free from the Controul of her present and any
future husband and from and after her death then in trust for the use and
behoof of such person and persons such estate or estates as the said Elizabeth
by her last will and testament or any writing in the nature of a last will and
testament signed in the presence of one or more witnesses shall limit or appoint
and for want of such appointment then in trust for the Child or Children
of the said Elizabeth if them or any them living and if then is or are now such
then in trust for the person or persons who shall or may be her legal personal
