of the within States to me paid by William Chapman of Baltimore County in the State aforesaid at or before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell to the said William Chapman his executors administrators and assigns my two slaves Dan and Oliver the former being about seventeen and the latter about fourteen years of age to serve the said William Chapman his executors administrators and ^or^ assigns the former Dan until the tenth day of March which will be in the year Eighteen hundred and sixty seven and the latter Oliver until the tenth of March Eighteen hundred and Seventy one; at which periods I do manumit and set them free respectively if their conduct in the meantime and before the arrival of those respective periods be not such as to require them to serve a longer period by the determination ^or Judgment^ of any Court or any Judge of any County Court or of any Orphans Court of any County in the State aforesaid it being expressly understood and agreed by and between the parties hereto that this Bill of Sale is made on the agreement and condition following that is to say that if the said slaves or servants or either of them shall run away or abscond or be guilty of theft or any other crime or misdemeanor or shall commit acts of disobedience such that they are not subdued by reasonable correction before the respective terms above appointed for their becoming free the said William Chapman his executors administrators or assigns shall have the right and privilege of taken them or either of them before the County Court or Orphans Court of any County in said State or before any of the Judges of either of said Courts to prefer his or their complaint against the said slaves or servants or either of them and give proof or evidence of their misconduct in any respect and if in the opinion of such Court or Judge the said slaves or servants or either of them shall have been guilty of the charge preferred |
