in consideration of the sum of five dollars to me in hand paid the receipt whereof I hereby acknowledge, have released from slavery manumitted and set free and by these presents do release from slavery manumit and set free forthwith my negro woman named Harriet Howard about forty years of age and able to gain a sufficient livelihood and maintainance (she being the same negro woman purchased by me from John G. Holland as by reference to bill of sale dated 27th day of August 1846 and recorded among the chattel records of Howard County will more fully shew) and her the said Harriet Howard I do declare to be henceforth free manumitted and discharged from all manner of servitude or service to me my heirs or executors and administrators forever In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twentieth day of May one thousand eight hundred and fifty three Signed sealed and his delivered in the presence John x Howard (Seal) of E. C. Lyons mark W. H. Worthington F Earlougher Howard County to wit: On this twentieth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty four before me the subscriber a justice of the peace of the State of Maryland in and for Howard County personally appeared the said John Howard party grantor to the foregoing deed of Manumission and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed according to the true intent and meaning thereof. And I do further certify that I am satisfied of my own knowledge together with information given me that the said John Howard is the same person named and described as and professing to be party grantor to the foregoing deed of Manumission E.
