Eighteen hundred and fifty seven personally appeared before
me the subscriber a Justice of the Peace for Howard County
aforesaid David F S Ways and acknowledged the foregoing
bill of sale to be his act and deed

Negro man Thos Courtley
 I Joel Blew of Howard County and State of
Maryland do hereby manumit and set free my
negro Slave man Thomas Courtley aged about
29 years his freedom to commence from the date
of these presents.  Witness my hand and seal
this first day of January 1858
