16 State of Maryland Dorchester County to wit On this thirty first day of August in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and fifty two personally appears Sarah Medford party to the within instrument of writing before me the Subscriber a Justice of the peace of the State of Maryland for Dorchester County and acknowledges the same to be her act and deed for the purposes within named and the negro boy within named to be free manumitted and discharged from all Services to her or to any one claiming under her and to be free and manumitted or to be free at the age of Twenty one years as named in the within instrument of writing according to the acts of Assembly in Such case made and provided Acknowledged before Charles T. Smith J. P. William W. Crawford Be it remembered and it is hereby certified that the following Bill of Sale Exd from was received and recorded on the 6th day of September 1852 to wit: Levin Lake & wife Know all men by these presents that we Levin Lake and Angeline Lake his wife of the State of Mississippi and County of Yalabusha for and in Consideration of the Sum of Two hundred and Eighty five Dollars Current Money to us in hand paid by William W. Crawford of the State of Maryland & County of Dorchester have granted bargained Sold and by these presents do grant bargain and Sell unto the Said William W. Crawford his heirs and assigns a certain negro boy named Jim to served according to the will of John Crawford deceased of the said County of Dorchester & State of Maryland to serve thirty six (36) years from January Eighteen hundred and forty five the time of said negro Jims birth have bargained sold unto the said William Crawford his heirs executors administrators and assigns forever the title of the said negro we the parties of the First part do warrant and defend to the parties of the Second part against all Claims or Claimants whatsoever according to the will of the said John Crawford above mentioned In testimony whereof we the parties have hereunto set our hands and affixed our seals this the twentieth (20th) day of August Eighteen Hundred and fifty two Levin Lake (Seal) Test & for his wife Whitefield Woolford J. Crawford (seal) State of Maryland Dorchester County Sct: On the twentieth day of August Eighteen hundred & fifty two personally appeared before me Levin Lake acting for himself & agent for his wife Angeline Lake & William Crawford and acknowledge the within Bill of Sale to be their act and deed according to the purport true intent and meaning of the same and at the same time Came before me William W. Crawford within mentioned and made Oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that the Consideration set forth in this Bill of Sale is true and lawful as therein set forth in this Bill of Sale According to the true intent and meaning of the acts of assembly of 1846 Chapter 291 made and provided Acknowledged before Sworn before Whitefieldd Woodford J. P. Received September 6th 1852 of William W. Crawford the sum of one dollar in lieu of a stamp or other Bill of Sale F. J. Henry Clk Samuel McCready Be it remembered and it is hereby Certified that the following Exd from Bill of Sale was received and recorded on the 13th day of Noah Dayton September 1852 to wit Know all men |
