Legislative Redistricting
Plan of 2002
NOTE: Article III, Section 5 of the Maryland Constitution grants the Court of Appeals
original jurisdiction in matters relating to legislative redistricting. The Governor
submitted a legislative redistricting plan to the General Assembly in accordance with
the Maryland Constitution; that plan took effect February 22, 2002. Several petitions
challenging the constitutionality of the plan were filed with the Court of Appeals, and
on June 11, 2002 the Court ruled the Governor's plan unconstitutional. On June 21,
2002 the Court issued an order establishing the legislative districts for electing
members of the General Assembly.
