WHEREAS, These attacks destroyed both towers of the World Trade Center, as
well as adjacent buildings, and seriously damaged the Pentagon; and
WHEREAS, These attacks were by far the deadliest terrorist attacks ever
launched against the United States, and, by targeting symbols of American strength
and success, clearly were intended to intimidate our nation and weaken its resolve;
and
WHEREAS, The General Assembly of Maryland wishes to honor those
firefighters, police officers, and citizens who risked their lives to rescue people trapped
in the towers of the World Trade Center and in the Pentagon, and who worked
tirelessly to clear the wreckage and to recover the bodies of people killed; and
WHEREAS, The General Assembly wishes to honor those heroes aboard United
Airlines flight 93, who gave their lives in the skies over Pennsylvania in a valiant
struggle to prevent the terrorist hijackers from using the aircraft as a weapon of mass
destruction in our Nation's Capital, thereby thwarting the terrorists' goal of striking at
the most precious symbols of American democracy, the U.S. Capitol and the White
House; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the
General Assembly of Maryland designates September 11 as "Maryland Day of
Remembrance of the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks"; and be it further
RESOLVED, That on September 11 and throughout the year, parents and
educators are encouraged to teach their children and students that the ideal of liberty
in the United States, which the terrorists attempted to destroy on September 11,
2001, remains unscathed; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be forwarded by the Department of
Legislative Services to the Honorable Parris N. Glendening, Governor of Maryland;
the Honorable Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr., President of the Senate of Maryland; and
the Honorable Casper R, Taylor, Jr., Speaker of the House of Delegates.
Signed May 16, 2002.
