Joint Resolution No. 9
(House Joint Resolution No. 2) A House Joint Resolution concerning Acknowledgment of the United States Navy Submarine Force on Its 100th Anniversary FOR the purpose of acknowledging the achievements of the United States Navy
Submarine Force on its 100th anniversary. WHEREAS, In the year 2000, the United States Navy Submarine Force will
celebrate a century of service to this nation; and WHEREAS, The United States Navy Submarine Force came into existence on
October 12, 1900, with the commissioning of the USS Holland; and WHEREAS, The Submarine Force began its mission with coastal and harbor
patrols and defense, came of age during World War II, was instrumental in the
successful and peaceful conclusion of the Cold War, and remains a key battle-proven
component of the nation's armed forces; and WHEREAS, The power of the Submarine Force was demonstrated during World
War II when 55 percent of all Japanese shipping was destroyed by U.S. submarines
even though submariners constituted less than 2 percent of all U.S. Navy personnel
and sustained the loss of 52 submarines and over 3,500 men; and WHEREAS, The Submarine Force has continued to be an active and vital part of
modern military operations, with submarines playing key roles in the Persian Gulf
war, the Balkans conflict, and naval operations against terrorist organizations and
international drug cartels; and WHEREAS, Veterans of the Submarine Force have served with honor,
distinction, and courage, risking their lives in combat; and WHEREAS, Over the years numerous Marylanders have honorably served their
country with distinction in the Submarine Force; and WHEREAS, Submarines have participated in numerous scientific expeditions,
ecological studies of the oceans, and salvage and rescue operations, thereby
significantly improving our understanding and control of the oceans; and WHEREAS, Submarine technology has proven invaluable to our nation by
strengthening the national defense, preserving world maritime freedom, and
producing scientific breakthroughs; and WHEREAS, It is altogether fitting and proper to honor the United States Navy
Submarine Force and its accomplishments on the occasion of the Force's 100th
anniversary; now, therefore, be it
