Article - Education

SUBTITLE 21. MARYLAND TEACHER SCHOLARSHIPS.

18-2101.

(A) IN THIS SUBTITLE THE FOLLOWING WORDS HAVE THE MEANINGS
INDICATED.

(B) "ELIGIBLE INSTITUTION" MEANS AN ANY A PUBLIC OR PRIVATE
INSTITUTION AS DEFINED BY § 18-103 OF THIS TITLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN THIS
STATE
THAT POSSESSES A CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL FROM THE MARYLAND
HIGHER EDUCATION
COMMISSION.

(C) (1) "SERVICE OBLIGATION" MEANS TO TEACH FULL TIME IN THE STATE
AS A CERTIFIED TEACHER IN A MARYLAND PUBLIC PUBLIC ELEMENTARY OR
SECONDARY SCHOOL.

(2) "SERVICE OBLIGATION" DOES NOT MEAN EMPLOYMENT AS
TEACHING ASSISTANTS, PROVISIONAL CERTIFICATE TEACHING POSITIONS,
VOLUNTEER SERVICE, PAID FELLOWSHIPS, OR INTERNSHIPS.

(D) "ADMINISTRATION" MEANS THE STATE SCHOLARSHIP ADMINISTRATION
AS DEFINED IN § 18-101(B) OF THIS TITLE.

18-2102.

THERE IS A PROGRAM OF MARYLAND TEACHER SCHOLARSHIPS THAT ARE
AWARDED UNDER THIS SUBTITLE FOR STUDENTS WHO PLEDGE TO WORK AS PUBLIC
ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN THIS STATE UPON
COMPLETION OF THEIR STUDIES.

18-2103.

(A) THE ADMINISTRATION SHALL ANNUALLY SELECT ELIGIBLE STUDENTS
AND OFFER A SCHOLARSHIP TO EACH STUDENT SELECTED TO BE USED AT AN
ELIGIBLE INSTITUTION OF THEIR CHOICE.

(B) (1) A RECIPIENT OF THE MARYLAND TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP SHALL:

(I) (1) BE A MARYLAND RESIDENT;

(II) (2) EXCEPT AS PROVIDED IN SUBSECTION (C) OF THIS
SECTION,
BE ACCEPTED FOR ADMISSION AS A FULL-TIME UNDERGRADUATE
STUDENT OR BE CURRENTLY ENROLLED AT AN ELIGIBLE INSTITUTION AS A
FULL-TIME UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT PURSUING A COURSE OF STUDY OR
PROGRAM IN AN ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE LEADING TO A MARYLAND PROFESSIONAL
TEACHER'S CERTIFICATE;

(III) (3) (I) FOR A STUDENT CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN HIGH
SCHOOL, HAVE EARNED A CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE OF AT LEAST 3.0 ON
A 4.0 SCALE OR ITS EQUIVALENT IN CORE CURRICULUM COURSES AT THE TIME OF
APPLICATION; OR
