(u) (1) In Somerset County the annual license fee is $1,000.

(2) SPIRITUOUS LIQUORS MAY BE SOLD FOR ON-SALE CONSUMPTION
ONLY, BUT BEER AND WINE MAY BE SOLD FOR BOTH ON- AND OFF-SALE
CONSUMPTION.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect
October 1, 1997.

(Senate Bill 329)

AN ACT concerning

Baltimore County - Sheriff - Salary

FOR the purpose of altering the maximum salary of the Sheriff of Baltimore County;
providing that this Act does not apply to the salary or compensation of the
incumbent Sheriff of Baltimore County; and generally relating to the salary of the
Sheriff of Baltimore County.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

Section 2-309(e)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

Article - Courts and Judicial Proceedings

2-309.

(e) The Sheriff of Baltimore County shall receive a salary of not more than
[$60,000] $70,000. The Sheriff shall appoint an under-sheriff and any number of deputies
and any clerical assistant required by the duties of the office. The Sheriff may also
appoint a number of deputies to the ranks of chief deputy, captain, lieutenant, and
sergeant as his duties and responsibilities require. The cost and expense of these
supervisory, administrative, and clerical positions, including salaries, shall be as provided
in the budget of the county by the county executive and as approved by the County
Council. All full-time employees under this subsection are subject to the provisions of the
county merit system and the rules and regulations passed by the County Council pursuant
to the charter, as to qualifications, compensation, and other regulations. Part-time
