(3) (I) THE SHERIFF MAY APPOINT PROBATIONARY DEPUTY
SHERIFFS, DEPUTY SHERIFFS, INVESTIGATORS, COMMUNICATIONS OFFICERS,
SECRETARIES, SUPERVISORS, ADMINISTRATORS, AND OTHER STAFF AS APPROVED
IN THE COUNTY BUDGET.
(II) THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS SHALL APPROVE THE SALARIES
FOR ALL STAFF APPOINTED BY THE SHERIFF.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect
October 1, 1995.

.AN ACT concerning
Calvert County Sheriff's Office - Deputy Sheriffs - Employment Status
FOR the purpose of providing that deputy sheriffs of the Calvert County Sheriff's Office
who are funded by the County Commissioners, after completing an initial probation
period, shall become merit system employees of the Sheriff's Office and may not be
dismissed without cause; providing that deputy sheriffs funded through grants or
other sources may be dismissed without cause when the funding source is depleted;
making stylistic changes; and generally relating to deputy sheriffs of the Calvert
County Sheriff's Office.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

(f) (2) The Sheriff may appoint deputy sheriffs in the number and at the salary
approved by the County Commissioners. The deputy sheriffs shall serve under the
direction of the Sheriff. Within one year of their appointment, they shall complete the
course prescribed for [policemen] POLICE OFFICERS by the Maryland Police Training
Commission. THE DEPUTY SHERIFFS FUNDED BY THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
WILL BECOME MERIT SYSTEM EMPLOYEES OF THE CALVERT COUNTY SHERIFF'S
OFFICE UPON COMPLETION OF THEIR INITIAL PROBATION PERIOD AND MAY NOT BE
