Devereux Travers This Indenture made this sixth day of March 1848 between Devereux Travers and Samuel D. LeCompte, both of Dorchester County in the state of Maryland, Witnesseth, that whereas the said Samuel D. LeCompte has this day entered security to Kendal M. Jacobs for said Devereux Travers, for the payment of the sum of ninety nine dollars, on or before the 4.th day of January 1849 Now this Indenture Witnesseth, that in consideration of the premises and to indemnify the said Sam.l D. LeCompte, and of the sum of five dollars in hand paid, at and before the sealing & delivery of these presents, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, the said Devereux Travers hath granted, bargained and sold, and by these presents doth grant, bargain & sell, to said Sam.l D. LeCompte, Negro woman Ibby, aged about 54 years, to him his administrators and Assigns. To have and to hold the said Negro Woman Ibby unto him the said Sam.l D. LeCompte, his Administrators, Executors & Assigns, to his own proper use and behoof: Provided Always, and it is the true intent and meaning of these presents, that if the said Devereux Travers shall pay the above sum of Money, on or before the day above specified, unto the said Kendal M. Jacobs, his Executors, Adm.rs or Assigns, then and in such case, these presents and every thing herein contained shall cease and be utterly null and void. In Witness whereof I |
