my negro man Joseph Webb to serve for the term of twenty years from
the fifteenth July 1847 and then to be free  To have and to hold the
said negro man Joseph Webb as above bargained & sold unto John E.
Stephens his heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns against me the
said Shadrach Mitchell my heirs Executors and Administrators and
Assigns all and every other person or persons shall and will warrant &
defend.  In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal

                            State of Maryland Dorchester County, To wit:
On this 14 day September 1847 before the subscriber a Justice of
the Peace in and for said County and state personally appeared
Shadrach Mitchell and John E. Stevens and Acknowledged the
above Bill of Sale or instrument of writing to be their Act &
deed according to the true intent and meaning thereof.

Mary Sadler              Be it remembered that the following Bill of sale
          from   Ex.d      was recorded on the 16.th day of September 1847, To wit:
John H. Carroll          Know all men by these presents that I John H. Carroll
                                 of Dorchester County and state of Maryland for and in
consideration of the sum of fifty dollars current money to me in hand
paid by Mary Sadler of the County and state aforesaid at and before the
sealing and delivery hereof the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge,
have granted, bargained and sold and by these presents do grant, bargain
and sell unto the said Mary Sadler her Executors Administrators and
Assigns two negro women one names Matilda Bond aged 26 years &
4 months one named Mary Le Compte aged twenty one one Horse Cart
and geers one Sow and nine Shoats and Harrow and all the geers one
sligh & one Steer all which property is now in my possession  To have
and to hold the same described property above bargained & sold to the
said Mary Sadler her Executors Administrators and Assigns forever to her
and their only proper use and benefit  And I the said John H. Carroll for
myself my Executors and Administrators shall and will warrant & forever
defend by these present to the said Mary Sadler her Executors Administrators
and Assigns the said described property against me my Executors and Administrators
and against all and every other person or persons whomsoever
claiming the same or any part thereof  In testimony whereof I have hereunto
set my hand and affixed my seal this 30.th day of August 1847.
