Executors, Administrators and Assigns, against him John Thomas,
his Executors Administrators, and against all and every person and
person whatever, will warrant and defend by these presents.   In
Witness he the said John Thomas hath hereto set his hand and
seal this 23.d day of September in the year of Our Lord Eighteen
hundred and forty Eight.

State of Maryland, Dorchester County, To wit:   Be it remembered
and it is hereby certified that on the twenty third day of September
in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred & forty eight
before the subscriber, one of the Justices of the Peace of the state
of Maryland, in and for Dorchester County, personally appears John
Thomas, he being know to the subscriber to be the person who is
named and described as and professing to be the party grantor, and
doth acknowledge the said Bill of sale or instrument of writing
to be his act and deed   At the same time personally appeared
Lewis Thomas, Grantee, and made Oath on the Holy Evangely
of Almighty God that the consideration set forth in the foregoing
Bill of Sale, or instrument of Writing, is true and bona
fide as therein set forth.   In testimony whereof I have subscribed
my name on the day & year aforesaid.            James Rea

I hereby certify that the stamp was annexed to this instrument
of Writing at the same time it was executed.      James Rea.


John W. Travers        Be it remembered that the following Bill of sale
Ex.d      from      55   was recorded on the 25.th day of September 1848.
Richard Tall               {Stamp}   Know all men by these presents that I
                                {one dol.}  Richard Tall, Adm.r of Joseph Tall, for and
in consideration of the sum of Three hundred dollars, to me in hand
paid by John W. D. Travers, have granted, bargained and sold, and by
these presents do grant, bargain & sell, unto the said John W. D. Travers
my Negro Man named Barzillai Lane, aged about forty five years,
slave for life, and sound in body & mind   To have and to hold
the said Negro Man Barzillai Lane, as above bargained and sold
unto the said John W. D. Travers, his heirs, Executors, Administrators
and Assigns, against me the said Richard Tall, Adm.r as aforesaid,
my heirs, executors and Administrators, and against all and every other
person or persons, shall and will warrant and defend.   In testimony
whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this 25.th day of September
