Dorchester County sct      Be it remembered that in this second
day of January 1842 personally appeared Thomas J H Eccleston party
to the within Instrument of writing before me the subscriber a
Justice of the peace of the state of maryland for the said
county and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed
for the purposes within mentioned acknowledged before

Thomas J H Eccleston      Be it remembered that the following
Ex.d         To                   Manumission was recorded in
Negro Cuffee                  3d January anno domini 1842 to wit
to all persons whom it doth or may concern  Be it Known that
I Thomas J H Eccleston of Blackwater in the county of Dorchester
and state of maryland for divers good causes and considerations
me thereunto runing do hereby release from slavery liberate
manumit and set free from and after the first day of January
which will be in the year of our Lord Eighteen Hundred and
forty three one negro man slave belonging to me and now in my
possesion by the name of Cuffee or by whatsoever name he may
be Known or called being at this time of the age of Forty one
years and the said negro man slave named Cuffee I do
declare to be thenceforth that is to say from and after the said
first day of January in the year of our Lord 1843 freed manumitted
and discharged from all manner of servitude or service to me my
my Executors or administrators and from all manner of claim or
right of claim of servitude or service by me my Executors or administrators
forever  I testimony whereof I have hereunto set
my hand and affixed my seal this second day of January
in the year of our Lord 1843
