Smart B. LeCompte      Be it remembered that the following Mortgage
Ex.d   from                    Bill of Sale was recorded October 15.th 1845.
Sarah Rauleigh              Know all men by these presents that I Sarah
                                     Rawleigh of Dorchester County for and in consideration
of Two hundred and thirty dollars & 16/100 current money of the
United States to me in hand paid by Smart B. LeCompte of the County
aforesaid at and before the sealing and delivering of these presents the
receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge and hereby grant, bargain,
sell and deliver and by these presents have granted, bargained, sold
and delivered unto the said Smart B. LeCompte the following property,
to wit; consisting of Six Negroes Viz. one Negro woman
Rebecca aged thirty six years, one Negro Woman Julia Ann
aged eighteen years, one Negro Girl Mary Elizabeth aged seven
years, one Negro Girl Margaret aged five years, one Negro Man
Glasgow aged fifteen years, and one Negro Boy Jacob aged one
year all of which property is now in my possession and which
I have put said LeCompte in possession of.  To have and to hold
the said above described property unto the said Smart B. LeCompte
his heirs and Assigns forever against me and my heirs and against
all persons whatsoever claiming the same or any part thereof to the
only proper use and behoof of the said Smart B. LeCompte and for
no other use, intent or purpose whatsoever:  Provided Nevertheless
and it is the true intent and meaning of these presents &
of the said parties hereto that if the said Sarah Rawleigh shall
pay and satisfy unto the said Smart B. LeCompte the full amount
above specefied which is Two hundred and thirty dollars and 16/100 of
a dollar with lawful interest from the date of these presents on
or before the twenty seventh day of September Eighteen hundred and
forty six then and in such case these presents and every matter and
thing herein contained shall cease and be utterly nul and void any
thing herein contained tot eh contrary notwithstanding it being the
true intent and meaning of these presents and of the said parties
hereunto the the aforesaid described property is mortgaged by the said
Sarah Rawleigh to the said Smart B. LeCompte to secure the debt
aforesaid and for no other purpose whatsoever.  In testimony whereof
the said Sarah Rawleigh has hereunto subscribed her name and
affixed her seal this 30.th day of September Eighteen hundred and
forty five.
Signed sealed in presence of.   The interlining in the aforegoing instrument
were made before the execution thereof
