11 John A L Ratcliff Be it remembered that the following bill of Ex.d from sale was recorded on 2d Jany anno domini 1842 Thomas Cantwell to wit Know all men by these presents that I Thomas Cantwell of Dorchester county and state of Maryland for and in consideration of the sum of one Hundred dollars current money to me in hand paid by John A L Ratcliff of the county and State aforesaid at or before the sealing and delivering of these presents the receipt whereof I the said Thomas Cantwell do hereby acknowledge have Granted bargained and sold and by these presents do Grant bargain and sell unto the said John A L Ratcliff his Executors administrators and assigns are negros called Susan Warfield and Know in my possesion to have and to hold the Said Girl called Susan Warfield to the said John A L Ratcliff his Executors administrators and assigns forever and I the said Thomas Cantwell for my self my heirs executors and administrators and against all and every person or persons whomsoever shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents Provided Nevertheless that in case I the said Thomas Cantwell shall pay and satisfy to the said John A L Ratcliff or to his Executors administrators or assigns the sum of one hundred dollars current money with Interest for the same on the 20th day of December 1843 next ensuing then this bill of sale and every matter and thing therein expressed shall be void and of now effect it being the true intent and meaning thereof that the said negro Girl Susan Warfield is Mortgage by me the said Thomas Cantwell ^to^ the said John A L Ratcliff to secure the payment of the money aforesaid in witness whereof I the said Thomas Cantwell Have Hereunto set my hand and seal this 31st day of December eighteen hundred and forty two in pressence of Arthur Francis his James Mobray Thomas + Cantwell (seal) mark State of Maryland Dorchester County to wit on this 31st day of December Eighteen hundred and forty two before me one of the Justices of the peace in and for said county appears Thomas Cantwell and acknowledges the foregoing writing to be his act and deed according to the true intent and meaning thereof and the act of assembly in such case made and provided Witness my hand William Rhea JP I also certify that the names interlined in the 20th and twenty first lines been done before the signing and sealing of the same William Rhea March 23 1847 Received of Mr Thomas Cantwell the receipt in full of all demands And I hereby release unto him all my demand of the paper that the Mortgage by Bill of Sale to me in the year of 1842 Test Job W Beckwith The amount of 7.49 John A L Ratcliff Be it remembered that the aforegoing receipt and release was recorded in the 7 day of April 1849 |
