AN ACT concerning

Registers of Wills and Clerks of the Circuit Courts - Salaries

FOR the purpose of altering the maximum salary that may be received by a register of
wills or a clerk of a circuit court; providing that this Act does not affect incumbents;
making certain stylistic changes; and generally relating to the compensation of
registers of wills and clerks of the circuit courts.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

(a)      (1) It is the intent of this section that each register shall receive a fair and
adequate compensation for the effort and duties required of [him by his] THE
REGISTER BY THE REGISTER'S office.

(2) The volume and character of work done by [him as] THE register shall
be in comparison to the salary fixed by the Board of Public Works for each of the other
registers.

(b)      (1) Each register is entitled to receive an annual salary of not less than
$6,000 and not more than [$60,000] $68,000 $64,000, to be determined in each instance by
the Board of Public Works.

(2) In determining the annual salary of the register, the Board of Public
Works shall be guided in the exercise of its discretion by:

(i) The population of the county determined by the last official
United States census;
